Allied Pilots Association to Picket AMR Shareholders Meeting on May 21
-(Business Wire)-May 20, 2008 - WHO: Allied Pilots Association, collective bargaining agent for the 12,000 pilots of American Airlines (NYSE: AMR), the nation's largest passenger carrier.
WHAT: "National Accountability Day" coinciding with AMR's annual shareholders meeting. Large numbers of pilots, flight attendants and other employees will conduct static picketing to express concern over the airline's current direction.
WHERE: American Airlines Training & Conference Center, 4501 Highway 360, Fort Worth, Texas.
WHEN: Wednesday, May 21 beginning at 7:15 a.m. Central Daylight Time.
WHY: APA believes American Airlines management must change course. The airline is currently failing its customers, shareholders and employees, as demonstrated by the mass flight cancellations in March and April, the worst on-time performance in March of 19 U.S. carriers, AMR stock trading near its four-year low, prolonged labor contract negotiations, and numerous safety-related problems.
Founded in 1963, APA is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. There are currently 2,043 American Airlines pilots on furlough. The furloughs began shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Also, several hundred American Airlines pilots are on full-time military leave of absence serving in the armed forces. The union's Web site address is www.alliedpilots.org. American Airlines is the nation's largest passenger carrier.
