John McCain Visit Gives Hope to Local Green Enterprise
SEATTLE-(Business Wire)-May 19, 2008 - Standard Carbon LLC, based in Woodinville, expects that presidential candidate John McCain's climate plan will be good for its carbon offset business. The company has been assisting voluntary efforts to clean up the air by local businesses, but anticipates a booming market when new laws require less CO2 pollution. McCain's proposal promises to raise the price, and likely profits, from selling carbon offsets.
McCain's Northwest campaign swing emphasized the presidential candidate's commitment to leadership on environmental issues, starting from the White House. He met with a panel of local leaders, including Sally Jewell, Chief Executive of REI and Bruce Williams, CEO of Homestreet Bank, to discuss the challenges they face as businesses protecting Washington's environment. McCain stressed the role of renewable energy and developing new technologies to deal with climate change.
Standard Carbon's Brendan Woodward participated in Sen. McCain's campaign stop at the Cedar River Watershed, and heard first-hand how McCain intends to support private sector solutions when president. "John McCain understands that we can protect our environment and our economy at the same time. I believe that his proposal for a federal cap and trade system is ambitious, yet 100% achievable," said Woodward.
The cap and trade system that McCain proposed on his Northwest visit would require large greenhouse gas polluters to find innovative ways to clean up their CO2 pollution. The firms that do not meet federally mandated targets would be required to purchase carbon offset credits from firms that clean up beyond what the law requires. Renewable energy and zero emissions nuclear power generated in the Northwest would be eligible under the system to sell carbon offsets.
