Reel Ideas Studio Cultivates Student Filmmakers at Cannes
SAN JOSE, Calif.-(Business Wire)-May 6, 2008 - Real Ideas Studio, Inc. a non-profit organization dedicated to the development and advancement of student filmmakers, today announced it is teaming with Adobe Systems Incorporated, Vancouver Film School's Digital Design Program, Intel Corporation, Sony Corporation and Dell Precision(TM) Workstations to bring together student and professional filmmakers during the 61st Annual Cannes Film Festival taking place May 14 to 25 in Cannes, France. The Reel Ideas Studio program features onsite and online documentary film competitions and an online community at www.reelideasstudio.com, where participants and winners will be highlighted and the public will also have the opportunity to view the films and vote for their favorites.
"By bringing student and professional filmmakers together at Cannes, the Reel Ideas Studio program offers amazing mentorship opportunities for students hoping to gain access to the industry luminaries whose work they study," said Jim Kenney, Reel Ideas Studio Program director and founding board member. "We invite everyone to visit the Reel Ideas Studio and experience Cannes through the lens of some of the world's most talented, emerging student filmmakers."
The online documentary film challenge recognizes the best three-to-five minute short subject films created as part of the Reel Ideas Studio Online Community. Films will focus on topics concerning the local regions of the teams. The deadline to register a complete team is May 14 and all documentaries must be posted to the www.reelideasstudio.com site in Adobe Flash(R) video by 4:00 p.m. GMT on May 22.
For the onsite challenge taking place as part of the Cannes Short Film Corner, 45 students from more than thirty film schools around the world will be divided into nine collaborative teams and paired with mentors to create documentaries on their experience at Cannes. Mentors include professional filmmakers from California College of the Arts, Vancouver Film School, American University Paris and the University of Southern California. Partner Sony will provide camera equipment and partner Dell will provide workstations to the student teams.
For the second year in a row, faculty, alumni and students from Vancouver Film School's Digital Design Program are creating and maintaining the Reel Ideas Studio Online Community used for the competition. Individuals involved in the challenges will be able to share their progress and collaborate with team members via the site. Filmmakers can also upload clips, access files such as animations, sound files, images and logos to share with other team members.
"High-impact, rich cinematic images that jump off a movie screen can connect aspiring filmmakers from across the world and extend a filmmaker's creativity beyond their deepest imagination," said Jim Guerard, vice president and general manager of Dynamic Media for Adobe. "Adobe is proud to sponsor Reel Ideas Studio and help provide students with the resources they need to further their passion and talent for the film industry."
"The invitation to develop the Reel Ideas Studio online community for the second year running is a reflection of the world class talent delivered by the students, alumni and faculty in the VFS Digital Design program," said Stephen Webster, Director of Marketing at Vancouver Film School. "We are proud to see our students receive this rare opportunity to collaborate with the top young filmmakers from around the world at the Cannes Short Film Corner."
"By sponsoring the Reel Idea Studio film competition, Intel hopes to encourage and empower the creative talents of these young aspiring filmmakers," said Elliot Garbus, Vice President Software and Solutions Group and General Manager Visual Computing Software Division. "Using these Dell mobile workstations and workstation PCs powered by Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad and Quad-Core Intel(R) Xeon(R) processors, today's filmmakers have the performance and freedom they need to liberate their creativity to capture, express and really share their visions."
"Our part of the Reel Ideas Studio program is to deliver some of the most powerful Dell Precision workstations powered by Intel technology that together with Adobe software will allow emerging filmmakers to unleash their creativity," said Antonio Julio, director, Dell Product Group. "I'm excited to see the results when industry-leading technology and the talent of the students are combined to bring their passion and stories to life."
"Sony has had a long association with the Reel Ideas Studio program and I am pleased to say that in 2008 the students will be utilising Sony's new XDCAM EX PMW-EX1 camcorder which is ideal for a range of filmmakers from budget level all the way through to Studio productions," said Bill Drummond, Product Manager, Sony Europe. "As our entry-level CineAlta product, the PMW-EX1 will surely be a big hit with the students!"
