PennFuture Launches Great Green Jobs Campaign
HARRISBURG, Pa.-(Business Wire)-March 12, 2008 - Citizens for Pennsylvania's Future (PennFuture) president and CEO John Hanger announced the formation of the Great Green Jobs Campaign today at a press conference in the State Capitol Building in Harrisburg. Hanger was joined by Department of Environmental Protection Kathleen McGinty, former DEP Secretary Jim Seif who served in the Ridge Administration, legislators, representatives from the wind and solar industries as well as other businesses, economic development, faith organizations and environmental groups in launching the campaign.
Hanger said that the first goal of the campaign is passage of the Energy Conservation Bill, House Bill 2200 and the Clean Energy Funding Bill, Special Session House Bill 1. HB 2200 passed the House in February and SHB 1 passed the House yesterday.
"Passage of House Bill 2200 and Special Session House Bill 1 by the Senate would be a one-two punch against an economy sliding into recession, skyrocketing fuel prices and pollution," said Hanger. "The Energy Conservation Bill and the Clean Energy Funding Bill would put thousands of Pennsylvanians to work helping consumers and businesses save energy and money, building new clean power plants, and growing a new green economy."
Hanger noted that the campaign was able to recruit 57 businesses and organizations in under a week's time. The campaign endorsers include the international wind company Iberdrola, a manufacturer of solar technologies SunEdison, Republicans for Environmental Protection, the Vote Solar Initiative, the Hershey-Harrisburg Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility, and the Pennsylvania Council of Churches among others.
"The coalition reflects the widespread public support for innovation and investment in energy saving and clean energy technologies," said Hanger. "Both HB 2200 and SHB 1 passed the House with strong bi-partisan support. We are asking the Senate to take quick action on the bills so we can start creating the new jobs that a clean energy economy will need."
PennFuture, which is about to mark the tenth anniversary of the organization's founding, is a statewide public interest membership organization that advances policies to protect and improve the state's environment and economy. With offices in Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and West Chester, PennFuture's activities include litigating cases before regulatory bodies and in local, state and federal courts, advocating and advancing legislative action on a state and federal level, public education and assisting citizens in public advocacy.
