Helium Partners with the National Press Club
ANDOVER, Mass.-(Business Wire)-February 19, 2008 - Helium (www.Helium.com), the leader in citizen journalism online, announced today an innovative partnership with the National Press Club (NPC), the world's most professional club for journalists. Through this alliance, Helium's top-ranked writers can apply for membership with the NPC. This marks the most significant outreach to a non-traditional news outlet in the NPC's 100-year history.
Helium recently announced its partnership with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, the leader in international nonprofit journalism. Together, Helium, the NPC and the Pulitzer Center work to bridge the gap between traditional journalism and citizen journalism, while upholding the highest standard of quality writing.
"The world is changing, and journalism is changing with it," said Sylvia Smith, president of the National Press Club. "Nothing changes the National Press Club's commitment to supporting high-quality journalism. The Club welcomes to its membership communicators from traditional and non-traditional media. The Helium model helps us find citizen journalists who are good candidates for Press Club membership."
The NPC leverages Helium's unique writer recognition feature, Star Status. Star Status identifies the site's most highly ranked writers and is based on an individual's body of work. Helium writers that have a five-star ranking are encouraged to apply for NPC membership.
"The National Press Club has been setting the standard for quality journalism for years, and is now at the forefront of embracing citizen journalism," said Mark Ranalli, president and CEO of Helium. "We are thrilled to be partnering with the most prestigious press club in the world. With their involvement, we believe we can elevate the stature, awareness and quality of citizen journalism."
At Helium's core is a community of writers and information seekers, and Star Status exemplifies the site's fundamentals: quality content and expert insight. The experts at Helium are a group of more than 100,000 citizen journalists sharing real insight and experiences on more than 85,000 topics.
