Taco, Inc. Warms up to Disk-Based Backup from ExaGrid Systems

WESTBOROUGH, Mass.-(Business Wire)-February 13, 2007 - ExaGrid Systems, Inc., (www.exagrid.com) the leader in cost-effective and scalable disk-based backup solutions, today announced that Taco, Inc., a leader in the heating and cooling industry, has selected the ExaGrid disk-based backup system to cost-effectively protect its vital corporate data. Taco was looking for a disk-based backup solution to reduce its weekly backup window despite rapidly growing primary data. The company was performing full backups from its main SAN each weekend over a period of 46 hours. With the ExaGrid system in place, the company's backup window was substantially reduced from 46 hours to 16 hours.

For Taco, a key deciding factor in evaluating disk-based backup systems was data reduction technology, and Dennis Rachiele, Taco's senior network administrator was impressed with ExaGrid's unique approach. "The way ExaGrid handles data reduction was an advantage," he said.

ExaGrid's innovative approach minimizes the amount of data to be stored by providing standard data compression for the most recent backups, along with byte-level delta data reduction for all previous backups. ExaGrid's byte-level delta data reduction technology stores changes from backup to backup instead of storing full file copies.

Taco is also enjoying faster and more convenient restores. "In the past, if we had something we needed to restore that was more than 15 days old, it had to be restored from tape and it was an absolute nightmare. We also couldn't store as much on our old system - only about 15 days worth of data. On the ExaGrid system, we now have a month's worth of data on disk and plenty of room for more," Rachiele said.

Because ExaGrid works with popular backup applications, Taco has preserved its investment in its existing Symantec(TM) Backup Exec(TM) application. "ExaGrid really is plug-and-play," Rachiele said. "It's very easy to use. We set it up, and we have been up and running ever since."

The ExaGrid system is a turnkey, plug-and-play solution that sits behind customers' existing backup applications and enables faster and more reliable backups and restores. Backup windows are reduced by an average of 30 percent to 80 percent. ExaGrid's unique byte-level delta data reduction and last backup compression, coupled with high quality SATA storage, is on average about 25 percent to 30 percent the price of standard drives without data reduction. This unique approach reduces the amount of disk space needed by at least 20 to 1.

Working with ExaGrid has helped Taco quickly gain control of its backup situation. "A lot of companies I've dealt with in the past don't do what they say they're going to do. We haven't had that problem with ExaGrid," Rachiele said.

"ExaGrid's innovative approach is a perfect fit for Taco, Inc. The company immediately realized a dramatic reduction in its backup window and can now cost-effectively store more data," said Bill Andrews, president and CEO of ExaGrid Systems. "Additionally, ExaGrid's ability to support a second, off-site copy of the backup data, while using WAN resources efficiently, will help Taco solidify its backup and disaster recovery strategy."
