California Strawberry Growers Announce Annual College Scholarships for Children of the Industry’s Farm Workers
WATSONVILLE, Calif.-(Business Wire)-February 17, 2009 - With a month still to go until applications are due, the California Strawberry Commission today urged children of strawberry farm workers to apply for college scholarships before the March 13 deadline.
All children of California strawberry farm workers are eligible for the scholarships, up to $5,000 per year. Applicants typically live in the state’s main strawberry growing regions, which include Santa Cruz, Monterey, Ventura, Orange, San Diego, and Fresno counties.
The program, which has awarded nearly $1 million in its 14-year existence, is intended to assist both current college students and high school students bound for a community or four-year college who are in need of financial support.
“In these tough economic times, every dollar can mean a big difference for college students,” said Neil Nagata, the commission’s Board Chairman.
He called on educators, business leaders, elected officials and members of the media to help promote the scholarship opportunities.
For the 2008-09 academic year, the commission awarded nearly $125,000 to 53 college-bound high school students and 62 continuing college students. The funds go to tuition and books; there is no restriction on the students’ preferred field of study.
“Over the years, strawberry commission scholarships have been instrumental in helping hundreds of our farm workers put their children through college,” said Nagata. “It has been especially gratifying to see these students go on to pursue careers as teachers, lawyers, nurses and doctors.”
