Orlando Magic’s Superman Dwight Howard on the Cover of the New Issue of ESPN The Magazine
NEW YORK-(Business Wire)-February 17, 2009 - In Above the Rim, Beyond the Arc in the new issue of ESPN The Magazine on newsstands now, senior writer Ric Bucher reports on the once over-the-top flash being eliminated from the NBA. Derek Fisher, NBA Players Association President thinks the dress code does deserve some credit – “but the style of the NBA players is different because the guys are thinking bigger. They’re expanding their minds beyond basketball.” In a stylized photo spread, NBA stars Dwight Howard, Rudy Gay, Jason Kapono and Derrick Rose “model” the new sophistication of the NBA.
The Magazine’s 2009 NASCAR Preview:
Jimmie Johnson is starting his quest to become NASCAR’s first driver to win four straight Cup championships. But if you think it is business as usual for No. 48, you haven’t been paying attention. In Mileage May Vary senior writer Ryan McGee delves into the pitfalls of four-peating and what Johnson is doing to stay ahead of the pack. McGee also set up Carl Edwards with the most fuel-efficient man on the planet, Dr. Jack Martin, a professor of sustainable technologies at Appalachian State and world champion hyper-miler - together in a Ford Fusion to see who could squeeze the most miles per gallon out of it, and maybe provide Edwards with fuel-saving tips that could help him in his battle with Jimmie Johnson. The preview also looks at how the economy is effecting NASCAR, and which slimmed-down Sprint Cup garages are best equipped for big 2009 runs.
Plus, now that he’s moved into the White House, President Obama is looking for a room with a high-enough ceiling to install a basketball court. Our 44th president is a player and a fan, the kind who will surely be tempted to use his free-at-last BlackBerry to peep White Sox scores on Air Force One. So while he’s busy working out that pesky problem with the economy, The Magazine offers some background and advice on how to handle the sporting aspects of his new gig.
Select tips:
- Do The Right Thing: John F. Kennedy gave Redskins owner George Preston Marshall a choice: integrate the team or lose the right to play at publicly owned DC Stadium.
- Know Your Limitations: Nixon was such a Redskins fan that he traveled to Camp David to watch games blacked out in the District. In 1971, he suggested to coach George Allen that he use a flanker reverse in a playoff game against the 49ers. The play lost 13 yards.
- Beware Angry Bunnies: While Jimmy Carter was fishing in Georgia in 1979, a swamp rabbit gnashing its teeth swam toward his canoe. The commander in chief deflected it with an oar, but the story of his being attacked by a bunny haunted him the rest of his term.
- Definitely Be Careful When You Tee It Up: Bill Clinton teed it up with O.J. just a couple of months before the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. After the round, The Juice said, “I didn’t vote for him, but now I’m a big fan.” There’s an endorsement you want.
