CarterBaldwin Executive Search Places President/COO and General Counsel for Mobile Data Solutions and Services Leader Motricity
SEATTLE-(Business Wire)-February 17, 2009 - CarterBaldwin executive search, a leading provider of retained executive search services, today announced that Jim Smith has been appointed to the role of President/Chief Operating Officer and Richard E. Leigh, Jr. as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Bellevue, WA-based Motricity.
Motricity is a leading provider of mobile data solutions and services. The company is behind some of the most innovative mobile content developments over the last 12 years, serving as the “brand behind the brand” for customers such as AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Alltel, CNN, FOX News, A&E and Condé Nast. Their long-standing relationships with carriers and content providers put the company at the center of the mobile ecosystem.
Smith brings over 20 years of global operating and management experience to his new role. For the last six years he served as a senior executive at Avaya, a global communications company where he was responsible for a $600 million application business and established it as the global market share leader. Before Avaya, Smith was COO and co-founder of Vector Development, an e-commerce operating company. In his new position with Motricity, he will focus on market expansion and day-to-day operations.
Leigh comes to Motricity with an impressive track record of providing strategic legal counsel to corporate and non-profit clients, including being the general counsel for Cell Therapeutics, Inc. Prior to Cell Therapeutics, Leigh spent 7 years as the general counsel for Paul Allen’s Vulcan Inc. Leigh will act as a strategic advisor on legal, regulatory and business matters for Motricity.
CarterBaldwin partner Terry Addington, a veteran of the mobile communications industry, led the search for Motricity. As former President and CEO of First Cellular of Southern Illinois and Chairman of the Board of the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA), Addington specializes in placing C-suite executives in the area of wireless telecommunications and peripheral technology and service areas.
Addington described the Motricity search as “a dynamic and leading company in the telecom sector looking for world-class leaders who could not only provide expertise but also strategic business insights on a global scale.” The search began in Durham, NC where the company was headquartered through the end of last year. But, in the middle of the search, Motricity completed a major acquisition and decided to relocate their headquarters to Bellevue, WA. Addington quickly refocused the search and had a full slate of local candidates within just a few weeks. “CarterBaldwin’s ability to execute exceeded our expectations. Their flexibility and hands-on approach provided the kinds of results we needed,” says Motricity chairman and chief executive officer Ryan Wuerch. “We look forward to leveraging Jim and Richard’s expertise in growing markets both domestically and internationally to take our business into 2009.”
