Census Bureau Daily Feature for Monday, February 16: For the Birds
WASHINGTON-(Business Wire)-February 16, 2009 - Profile America — Monday, February 16th. When you hear that something is “for the birds,” it’s not meant as a compliment. But February is literally for the birds and in a positive way. First, today winds up the Great Backyard Bird Count — in which thousands of volunteers across the country track the number and types of birds that live near their homes. The results will help identify species that are in trouble. And, February is National Bird Feeding Month, with the goal of helping birds survive harsh winter weather. More than 12 million people across the U.S. are active bird watchers. They account for a big chunk of the more than $1 billion spent each year on binoculars and other optical equipment in their pursuit of sighting different bird species. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at www.census.gov.
