ORLANDO, Fla.-(Business Wire)-February 12, 2009 - BLACK ENTERPRISE honored four legendary African American women at the 2009 Women of Power Summit Legacy Awards, Wednesday, Feb. 11. The gala kicked off the fourth annual Women of Power Summit, a four-day executive leadership conference attended by nearly 700 professional women of color.

This year's distinguished honorees were:

Mary Frances Berry, Ph.D., Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought and Professor of History, University of Pennsylvania.

Leah Chase, owner and executive chef, Dooky Chase’s Restaurant. Known as the Queen of Creole Cuisine, her New Orleans landmark restaurant was a well-known gathering place during the 1960s among many who participated in the Civil Rights movement.

Dr. Joycelyn Elders, America’s first African American U.S. Surgeon General and the second woman to head the U.S. Public Health Service.

JoAnn Price, co-founder and managing partner of Fairview Capital Management. Fairview Capital, one of the nation’s largest black-owned private equity firms, has $2.4 billion in capital under management.

"The Women of Power Legacy Award recognizes African American women trailblazers whose accomplishments have shattered barriers and opened doors of opportunity to women of color," said Barbara Graves, BLACK ENTERPRISE senior vice president and general manager. "We're honored to celebrate this year's recipients, and confident that their record of achievement will continue to set the standard for our next generation of women leaders."

Addressing the gathering of female professionals, Dr. Elders explained: “Let me tell you the characteristics of a good leader. First you have to have clarity of vision. Know where you want to go and know what you want to do. Be competent. Be consistent. Be committed. Finally you’ve got to have control and cohesion or you can’t get there. With all the women in this room, and with us having a woman in the White House that looks like us, we can stand up and fight for the things we need.”

The final award recipient of the evening, Leah Chase, brought the crowd to its feet. Despite the fact that her landmark New Orleans eatery has served Presidents Barack Obama and John F. Kennedy, and famous musical and silver screen legends Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, and Lena Horne, she accepted her award with humility, saying: “I don’t care if you’re the pope or the president, you have to eat and I can cook.” She concluded by passing down her recipe for success: “My father taught me three things—pray, work, and do for others.”
