Ocean Tomo to Auction Rare and Prized PTL Media Library on March 27th – Complete Collection of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker Recordings and Images
CHICAGO-(Business Wire)-February 12, 2009 - Ocean Tomo Auctions, LLC today announced it will offer the most comprehensive collection of high-quality, original first generation video recordings of The PTL Club and related programs and images. The rare and unparalleled archive of approximately 15,000 hours of video recordings and 16,646 still images will be placed on the block as The PTL Library, or Lot 38, at Ocean Tomo’s Spring Live IP Auction on March 27th at the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco.
“The PTL Network, created by Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker in the mid 1970's, was the first, largest and most successful evangelical Christian television ministry in the world. During PTL's ten year history, the Bakkers became two of the most recognizable televangelists in the world, and the network's flagship talk show, The PTL Club, hosted by the Bakkers, reached as many as 12 million viewers daily across more than 100 television stations,” said Ben Dyer, President of Gospel Properties, LLC.”
“This comprehensive collection of videotape archives contains wholesome and nostalgic content that appeals to a broad audience of evangelical Christians estimated to number 88 million in the US alone. High production values, talented musical performers, and notable guests complemented the genuine and mesmerizing charm of the Bakkers during their prime years,” continued Dyer. “The shows are as moving and meaningful today as when originally aired.”
Gospel Properties, LLC is an investor group based in Atlanta that acquired the assets from the estate of a cable content provider interested only in the musical performances. These investors have now thoroughly inventoried the lot and put in place all the necessary facilities to digitize and edit from the original masters. If needed, Gospel Properties can provide to the Buyer post-auction technical support to help get these desirable properties back into distribution either in their original form or remixed as desired. A trailer is available in the Ocean Tomo data room or on DVD.
The featured assets in Lot 38 include: approximately 15,069 videotapes, together with all registered and unregistered copyrights in works of authorship fixed on such videotapes, including the following unregistered copyrights: The PTL Club; The PTL Program; The Jim and Tammy Show; Breakfast with Jim and Tammy; Camp Meeting USA; All Night Gospel Sing; and Tammy’s House Party. Accompanying this extremely rare video collection is a group of approximately 16,646 slides, negatives and prints of production stills taken of personalities, locations, performances, VIPs, and world travel and missions.
“The value based on the rarity and pristine condition of the collection is enhanced by the ever increasing financial earnings power from vintage popular culture, as evidenced by the rapid growth in the number of religious, inspirational, nostalgic, historical, and musical cable and satellite channels available 24 hours per day,” said Dean Becker, Ocean Tomo’s Vice Chairman. “In addition, the sheer quantity of the broadcast quality content in this Lot indicates an enormous production cost if one were to re-create a series of shows of this caliber today.”
