Regional Newspaper of the 2010 Winter Games, Canwest celebrates ‘above the fold’ with one year to go

TORONTO-(Business Wire)-February 12, 2009 - Canwest Publishing Inc., Official Regional Newspaper Publisher for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, is celebrating Thursday, February 12, 2009, the One Year Countdown to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony, by bringing the spirit of the Games to its publications with several specific marketing activities.

“The world has been invited to Vancouver and Whistler in 2010 and it’s our role to report on all the news surrounding the 2010 Winter Games,” says Dennis Skulsky, President and CEO Canwest Publishing. “As an Official Supplier and Regional Newspaper Publisher we are also able to offer our advertisers and other sponsors of the Games unique opportunities to celebrate and show their spirit in special sections and Games guides.”

As a first for the company, Canwest’s ten regional daily publications: The Gazette, The Ottawa Citizen, Windsor Star, Regina Leader-Post, Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, The Vancouver Sun, The Province and the Victoria Times Colonist have all added the Vancouver 2010 Official Supplier mark to each masthead. The company, in its history of supporting community events and celebrating historical milestones, has never marked an external event by changing all of its mastheads.

Each newspaper website will host a 2010 Winter Games news specific section that will house all the 2010 Winter Games content required for those interested in more information about athletes, sports, venues and even the cities of Vancouver and Whistler. A 2010 Winter Games-themed advertising campaign will roll out nationally. The campaign, created in house at The Vancouver Sun and The Province newspapers will raise awareness of each newspaper’s role with the Games. The campaign will be supported by television, radio and online executions over the year leading up to the Games.

Additionally, host city Vancouver will see the Installation of 100 custom designed 2010 Winter Games themed newspaper coinboxes in various areas around the downtown core and The Vancouver Sun and The Province offices at 200 Granville Street in Vancouver, have worked with 3M Canada to wrap windows and elevators in high traffic areas with athlete imagery and artwork.
