OXNARD, Calif.-(Business Wire)-February 11, 2009 - In anticipation of tens of millions of people watching the inauguration of Barack Obama on their TV sets and home computers, a major U.S. telecom service provider selected the Ventura video transport platform from Network Electronics / VPG. The platform enabled the incorporation of multiple video images from many Washington D.C. venues into one central switching location and then blasted them to news services and broadcast networks worldwide. The $3 million order of video transport and switching equipment purchased for inauguration coverage also represents a significant sales win for Network Electronics / VPG. Specifically, more than 400 Network Electronics / VPG VS551-D universal transport modules were ordered. Other Network Electronics / VPG equipment deployed for the event included 4- and 8-channel optical and time-division multiplexers.

Eugene Keane, CEO, Network Electronics / VPG’s Video Products Group Division, is well satisfied with the performance of the Ventura equipment for coverage of the historic event. "We designed the VS551-D with the goal of reducing our customers’ capital and operating expenses while increasing their ability to deliver flexible service," he said. "The compliments we have received on the VS551-D confirm that we met our design goals."

The service provider chose the NEBS-3 – compliant Ventura VS551-D for its ability to transport any analog or digital video format without manual intervention. A single encoder/decoder pair, occupying one slot each in the sending and receiving locations, can carry standards-compliant SD-SDI, HD-SDI, SDTI, DVB-ASI or even NTSC or PAL, just by changing the input signal.

All Network Electronics / VPG equipment used for the inauguration remains in service after the special-event network was dismantled. The flexibility of the Ventura VS551-D not only creates a wide range of options for redeployment, it also drastically reduces the need for spare equipment. Rather than keeping spares for each signal format, the VS551-D universal card can serve as the spare for every type of service it provides.
