Judy Belk Announces Candidacy for Alabama Senate District 22 Seat
MOBILE, Ala.-(Business Wire)-February 4, 2009 - Businesswoman and former president of Mobile County school board Judy Belk announced Wednesday that she will seek the Republican nomination for the vacant Senate District 22 seat.
Belk, owner of Belk Development Company, is currently involved in developing assisted living facilities in Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. Her background in public service includes serving on the executive committee for the 2006 Alabama Judicial Campaign Oversight Committee, as former director of the National Federation of Urban-Suburban School Districts and as president of the Mobile County School Board from 1983-87, among other positions. She is currently chairman of the Alabama Restaurant Association board of directors.
As part of her strategy for helping to rebuild public confidence in the political “system,” Belk, a former Democrat, also announced she will run on the Republican ticket. “As a pro-life, pro-business, pro-arms independent candidate who has reached out to the Democratic Party for many years, I decided to change my party affiliation. My focus has always been, and will always be, improving our communities, state and country above partisan politics.”
Active in business, government and community service for the past 30 years, Belk is familiar with issues that face south Alabama. “I’m looking forward to speaking with the people in every part of this district about what needs to be done to return honest government and prosperity to our communities, our state and the nation.”
