Basketball 101 with the Los Angeles Lakers: The Complete Game Called Huge Success

LOS ANGELES-(Business Wire)-February 3, 2009 - The LA Sports & Entertainment Commission’s (LASEC) exclusive Basketball 101 with the Los Angeles Lakers: The Complete Game was a huge success at STAPLES Center on Tuesday, January 20, 2009. This 5th annual officially sanctioned NBA event provided guests with a once-in-a-lifetime experience, having the opportunity to play on the Lakers’ court and learn the fundamentals of basketball from some of the most knowledgeable players of the game.

Headlining the list of panelists at this year’s event was Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson, who has coached his teams to a total of nine NBA championships. Guards Derek Fisher and Jordan Farmar, forward Luke Walton, Lakers assistant coaches (and former NBA stars) Kurt Rambis and Brian Shaw, Los Angeles Sparks head coach and former Lakers star Michael Cooper, Lakers basketball consultant (and inventor of the famed “triangle offense”) Tex Winter and retired NBA referee Hue Hollins were also participants. Lakers executive vice president Jeanie Buss participated in the panel discussion and the event was emceed by popular FSN personality Bill Macdonald.

The Verbum Dei High School boys’ varsity basketball team assisted the Lakers coaches and players with the on-court demonstration of basketball strategies. Event guests had the opportunity to shoot baskets on the Lakers floor, interact with the panelists, tour the Lakers locker room, and pose for photos with the Lakers Girls and the Lakers Championship trophies.

“This year’s turnout was the biggest to date – over 450 people - and I believe all our guests walked away with a better understanding of the game,” said LASEC President Kathy Schloessman.

Proceeds from the event will be split between the Lakers Youth Foundation and LASEC. LASEC is the official organization for the City of Los Angeles to seek, host, promote and retain major sporting and entertainment events that positively impact the local economy by attracting visitors to the city, giving them a reason to stay longer and return more frequently.
