Census Bureau Daily Feature for Saturday, January 31: Three Baseball Greats
-(Business Wire)-January 31, 2009 - Profile America — Saturday, January 31st. This is a big day for fans of major league baseball — three members of the Baseball Hall of Fame share this date as their birthday. Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to enter the major leagues with the Brooklyn Dodgers, was born 90 years ago. He died in 1972. Robinson joined the Dodgers in 1947 — the same year that famous pitcher Nolan Ryan, now 62, was born. And Ernie Banks, who played his entire career with the Chicago Cubs, is 78 today. In 1947, some 20 million Americans went to major league games. Today, that figure is 77.5 million annually.
