St. Vincent’s Health System Names John D. O’Neil New CEO
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-(Business Wire)-January 30, 2009 - St. Vincent’s Health System Board has named John D. O’Neil as the system’s President and Chief Executive Officer. O’Neil will assume his new role in late March, announced Board Chair Dan Sansone.
“John is a progressive, collaborative leader committed to quality, service, and our mission,” said Sansone. “The board is confident that his extensive experience in healthcare, proven track record within Ascension Health, and leadership skills make him a great choice to lead our 110-year-old health care ministry.”
O’Neil currently serves as Ministry Market Leader for five Ascension Health hospitals in New York and Connecticut, and as President and CEO of Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Hospital in Binghamton, NY. In this role, he provides strategic and operational leadership for Lourdes while promoting alignment among health ministries within the New York State and Connecticut market and with the Ascension Health System office on issues related to Mission, Vision and System Integration.
St. Vincent’s Health System also is a member of Ascension Health, the nation’s largest not-for-profit and largest Catholic health system.

Prior to joining Lourdes Hospital, Mr. O’Neil was the Executive Vice President/Administrator at St. Mary’s Warrick Hospital (a Daughter of Charity Hospital) in Boonville, Indiana from 1993 to 1999. He began his career in 1981 at Pekin Memorial Hospital in central Illinois, serving in a number of roles including Vice President of Medical Staff Services.
Mr. O’Neil holds a bachelor’s degree in business and psychology from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, and a master’s degree in health services administration from Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.
Mr. O’Neil is a member of the American Hospital Association Region 2 Advisory Council and the American College of Healthcare Executives, as well as the Executive Committee of the Iroquois Hospital Association in New York. As a strong believer in community service, he serves on the boards of various civic and professional organizations.
