MIAMI-(Business Wire)-January 27, 2009 - The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) Board of Directors approved the agency’s Five-Year Work Program (2010-2014), which includes a total of 55 projects and a combined estimated cost of $620.7 million. The work program provides funding for capacity improvements, safety enhancements and system-wide implementation of Open Road Tolling (ORT).

The detailed list, first approved by MDX’s Operations Committee, is focused on project advancements. Operations Committee Chair, Gonzalo Sanabria said, “This forward thinking is precisely what our community needs during this financial challenge. Now is the time to keep building for the future.” With unemployment rates on the rise, Sanabria added, “MDX strives to have a positive impact on the local economy, but more importantly create jobs. We have a responsibility to our residents.”

The Five-Year Work Program evolves as projects are completed, needs are identified, financial capabilities developed and priorities reevaluated. One of the many projects included is a study of an extension from SR 924/Gratigny Parkway east to I-95. This plan would connect drivers from Broward and Northwest Miami-Dade to other vital roadways while avoiding surface streets.

“An extensive effort is made to identify projects that provide the most benefit to our community,” said MDX Chair Maritza Gutierrez. “It is crucial we use toll revenue responsibly and effectively. Our goal is to listen to our citizens’ needs, address the issues and keep our area moving. This work program is a vital piece to that puzzle.”

MDX, funded primarily by toll revenue, receives no funding from sales, property nor gas tax. ORT, the key to funding the MDX system, is an all-electronic collection method. By replacing toll plazas with overhead gantries, drivers experience a faster and safer commute. Drivers pay for only the portion of road they use with no need to slow down or merge in and out traffic.
