Census Bureau Daily Feature for Monday, January 26: Chinese New Year
WASHINGTON-(Business Wire)-January 26, 2009 - Profile America — Monday, January 26th. In some parts of the country, today will be marked by fireworks, the clash of cymbals and colorful parades watched by festive crowds — it’s the Chinese New Year, 4707, the year of the ox. While the official calendar of China has been the Gregorian calendar for more than 50 years, many Chinese still celebrate the traditional new year, which occurs on the second new moon after the winter solstice. There are 3.6 million people of Chinese ancestry in the U.S., the largest group among the Asian population. Nearly half live in the West, but the largest single concentration is in New York City. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at www.census.gov.
