Obama and Korea’s Future to Be Addressed by Distinguished Korean Politician The Korea Society Presents: New Models for the U.S.-Republic of Korea Partnership in the Obama Administration
NEW YORK-(Business Wire)-January 15, 2009 - A distinguished member of the Republic of Korea’s National Assembly, Song Young-Gil, will speak at The Korea Society on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 12:00 PM. Song will suggest ways in which the United States and Korea can use their longstanding partnership to mutual benefit. This installment of The Korea Society’s Korean Leader’s Forum will take a hard look at how these two powers can help each other in these tumultuous times.
The inauguration of President Barack Obama provides an opportunity for the United States and South Korea to develop new solutions for problems that threaten them both, ranging from their flagging auto industries to the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan. ROK National Assembly member Song Young-Gil will suggest ways in which the two global partners can cooperate both to create more competitive automotive companies and to transform the allied presence in Afghanistan into a successful peacekeeping operation that could include North Korean participation. Drawing on the experiences of South Korea and Taiwan, Song will also offer suggestions for reforming the U.S. healthcare system.
Song Young-Gil is a three-term member of the ROK National Assembly from the Democratic Party. A lawyer and pro-democracy advocate, he was elected to the National Assembly in 2000. Song has served on the committees for finance and economy, legislation and judiciary and intelligence as well as health, welfare and family affairs. He has also served as general secretary of the Uri Party and senior vice chairman of the party’s policy committee. Song is a practicing attorney and holds degrees in business administration and Chinese language and literature from Yonsei University and Korea National Open University.
The luncheon and discussion will be held at The Korea Society, 950 Third Avenue, Eighth Floor, New York, NY. (Building entrance on the SW corner of 57th Street and Third Avenue.) Admission is $25 ($20 for members of The Korea Society) and includes a boxed lunch.
