President-Elect Obama Toast of Midwest Business
CINCINNATI-(Business Wire)-January 13, 2009 - According to one Cincinnati-based small business, President-elect Barack Obama is already helping the U.S. economy.
MarbleCoasters.com is reporting very brisk sales of its set of tumbled Italian marble coasters bearing images of President-elect Obama, his campaign messages and the presidential seal. The set of four coasters honoring the 44th U.S. president sell for $42 and are the hottest selling coasters among hundreds offered on the e-commerce site.
MarbleCoasters.com CEO Mark Schmidt reports that gift shops and wine stores from across America also are clamoring for the timeless commemoration of President-elect Obama's election and upcoming inauguration. "In my 14 years of selling marble coasters I have never experienced such strong sales of one particular set," Schmidt said. "If this is any indicator, President-elect Obama will be very good for the U.S. economy."

Schmidt has added a number of extra shifts to handle the demand for the Democratic coasters, to the delight of company employees at the boutique company located in Cincinnati's historic neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine.
In 1995 Schmidt developed the concept of printing on Italian Botticino marble with the introduction of 10 sets of Italian marble coasters, each consisting of four different images that have proven highly popular as gift sets sold by many prestigious California and New York wineries and by such iconic events as the Kentucky Derby. The line now boasts more than 400 sets in their library.
Schmidt anticipates the popularity of the presidential coasters will continue well past the Jan. 20 inauguration. "President-elect Obama has such broad appeal across so many demographics," Schmidt said. "The 44th president promises to be the No. 1 best-seller for us."
