Harlem Globetrotters “Spinning the Globe” Tour off to Sizzling Start
PHOENIX-(Business Wire)-January 5, 2009 - The World Famous Harlem Globetrotters have opened up their 2009 “Spinning the Globe” World Tour with even more momentum than they finished up their record-breaking 2008 tour, growing overall tour revenue by 18 percent and setting team box office revenue records in five cities (through January 4).
The tour, which tipped off December 26, has already set team box office revenue records in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, Cincinnati and Tulsa. Tour-opening performances at Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena (up 18% from last year), Chicago’s Allstate Arena (up 21% from last year) and Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena (up 38% from last year) were so successful, in fact, that the team today announced that it will return to each of those three cities once again (in Pittsburgh on April 11, Chicago on April 13 and Cleveland on April 16) before this year’s tour ends.
The Globetrotters established a new box office record in Tulsa this past weekend, with revenue up 143% from a year ago at the new BOK Center, and also played to a sold-out house on Saturday in Bourbonnais, Ill. In all, the Globetrotters’ 2009 “Spinning the Globe” World Tour will see the Globetrotters play 246 events in 210 North American cities through mid-April.
“The Harlem Globetrotters continue to resonate with families around the world,” said Michael Kenney, the Globetrotters’ senior vice president, live event marketing. “The great response we’ve seen through our opening weekend reinforces our belief that a Globetrotters’ show is an ‘unskippable’ event that provides great affordability and years of fond memories for the whole family.”
Sponsored by Campbell Soup Company, Spalding, and America’s Best Contacts and Eyeglasses, the Harlem Globetrotters are in their 83rd consecutive season of touring the world and have played in 120 countries on six continents, entertaining over 128 million fans.
