Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles Statement Supporting Israel

LOS ANGELES-(Business Wire)-January 4, 2009 - The Jewish Federation today renewed its support for Israel’s ongoing efforts to end Hamas rocket attacks on Israel from Gaza.

“No democratic, peace-loving nation in the world would stand by in the face of relentless attacks from a terrorist organization,” said John Fishel, president of The Jewish Federation. “In addition to attacking Israeli civilians, Hamas is endangering the Palestinians living in Gaza by placing its weaponry in civilian areas. The people of Israel overwhelmingly wish to live peacefully with their neighbors. However, as long as Hamas terrorists continue to operate aggressively in Gaza, the people of Israel remain under unacceptable threat.”

The focus of Israel’s newly launched ground offensive is to take control of Hamas' rocket-launching areas in defense of the Israeli communities in the south, in close proximity to Gaza. This follows airstrikes that began December 27 after Hamas called off a six-month long truce accord that it had frequently violated.

The charter of Hamas calls for the destruction of the State of Israel, and in the time that Hamas has been in control of the Gaza Strip it has repeatedly reiterated that goal.

Since September 2005 when Israel voluntarily withdrew from Gaza, Gaza-based terrorists have launched more than 6,000 rockets and mortars into Israel, many supplied by Iran and Syria. After Hamas ended the cease fire brokered earlier this year by Egypt, the terrorist organization renewed its daily attacks on Israel, and has deliberately placed much of its terrorist infrastructure in civilian neighborhoods, which will result in greater loss of life as Israel seeks to dismantle the Hamas terror network.
