Census Bureau Daily Feature for Saturday, December 27: Shenandoah Park
WASHINGTON-(Business Wire)-December 27, 2008 - Profile America — Saturday, December 27th. The Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia was established on this day in 1935 — capping almost four decades of effort. The park is formed of almost 200,000 acres of some of the nation’s most scenic countryside and contains hundreds of miles of trails, including a section of the Appalachian Trail. About 40 percent of the park is set aside as wilderness. Running through the park is the famous Skyline Drive, one of the most visited roadways in the National Park System. Across the country, there are almost 79 million acres of national parks, recreation areas and other facilities. These are enjoyed by nearly 273 million visitors a year.
