JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-(Business Wire)-December 22, 2008 - CSX Transportation was recently honored by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), celebrating the recognition of the company’s Health and Wellness program in NCQA’s highly regarded publication: “Quality Profiles: The Leadership Series – focus on Tobacco Dependence and Smoking Cessation.

“CSX is honored to receive this recognition for the work we are doing to promote health and wellness among our employees,” said Ken Glover, director of health and wellness at CSX Transportation. “By providing the CDC-recommended smoking cessation benefits and additional support and incentives, we’ve helped 33 percent of CSX participants quit smoking successfully. We hope more companies will recognize that this approach makes sense not only for their bottom line but also for the health and well-being of their employees.”

CSX Transportation, a member of the Florida Institute for Smoking Cessation (FISC), has implemented breakthrough efforts in creating and encouraging a healthy lifestyle for their employees.

“The Florida Institute for Smoking Cessation congratulates CSX for the honor of being included in the NCQA series,” said Brenda Olsen, co-chair of FISC and chief operating officer of the American Lung Association of Florida. “We are very proud of their accomplishment and for being such an exemplary model for workplace health and wellness initiatives.”

Each year, since the first publishing 18 years ago, national companies and health plans have been invited to submit their best case studies or best practices in health care initiatives to NCQA. Up to 50,000 submissions are considered but only one is chosen. This year, CSX was chosen because of their effective measurement use in their smoking cessation program, which aids with the intervention stages and allows for successful quit rates of its employees. CSX was also chosen because the NCQA deemed the company’s wellness program as a pacesetter for other companies.

The NCQA’s Quality Profiles – The Leadership Series is the 6th edition in collaboration with Pfizer Inc, providing companies with direction toward implementing effective and evidence-based interventions, delivering and enhancing tobacco dependence treatments, encouraging smoking cessation, preventing initial tobacco use, and reducing exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, thus contributing to the improved health of the public.

CSX Transportation is a Jacksonville, Florida-based company with 33,000 employees that is among America’s leading transportation companies providing rail, intermodal and rail-to-truck transload services.

The Florida Institute for Smoking Cessation is a joint project of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians and the American Lung Association of the Southeast to educate, inform and build consensus among employers, government and healthcare providers for making smoking cessation assistance accessible to all smokers who want to quit. Some of our members include: AARP Florida, American Heart Association, Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, Florida Public Health Association, Pfizer and the National Kidney Foundation of Florida and several other public health, policy and business leaders.
