CHICAGO-(Business Wire)-December 18, 2008 - In its December issue, Masters Athlete magazine unveils the winner of the Euflexxa Masters Athlete of the Year Award — Dara Torres, the 41-year-old Olympic swimmer from Los Angeles, who won three silver medals in the Beijing Games and demonstrated that age need not be a barrier to athletic excellence.

The Euflexxa Masters Athlete of the Year award recognizes supreme achievement in Masters athletics, which is defined as organized athletics for men and women over 40 years of age.

Despite competing against swimmers half her age, Torres won the silver medal in the women's 50-meter freestyle, placing second by just .01 seconds. She also helped the United States win two silver medals in relays. "On the world's biggest athletic stage, Dara Torres showed that age isn’t the barrier that many of us think it is. And for doing that with grace, humility and power, she is the Euflexxa Masters Athlete of the Year for 2008," said Sean Callahan, the magazine's editor.

In addition to honoring the best overall Masters athlete, the Euflexxa Masters Athlete of the Year award program also recognizes the top Masters sports organization Executives of the Year as well as 10 age-group winners — a man and a woman in each of five age categories: 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79 and 80-plus. Common adverse events reported were arthralgia (joint pain) and back pain. Temporary knee pain and swelling may occur after injection.
