Downhole Products, Ltd. Enhances Reamer Shoe Line with Patent-Pending Advancement
ABERDEEN, Scotland-(Business Wire)-September 29, 2009 - Downhole Products (DHP) has extended its technology leadership through modification of its already successful Pen-O-Trator™ line of reamer shoes with the inclusion of an enhanced aluminum nose with pre-stressed zones on the exterior surface.
The design modification, fueled by the request of a major international operator, assists in the break-up of the reamer shoe’s aluminium nose during drill out of the shoe-track following cementing. The engineered pattern of stress zones allows the aluminium to fracture into small pieces when the drill bit encounters the inside of the nose. The smaller pieces are more easily milled, drilled and evacuated from the wellbore.
Previous reamer shoes have occasionally caused problems when large pieces of aluminum broke out and spun beneath the drill out bit reducing penetration to a near stand still. In those cases the PDC cutters affixed to the drill bit would sometimes get coated with heated aluminum thus reducing their cutting efficiency.

Field testing of the enhanced reamer shoe has been conducted over a 12 month period with the major operator and continues to yield success.
DHP Pen-O-Trator reamer shoes have been equipped with this advancement and are available in sizes ranging from 6-5/8” to 20”.
