2,000 Families to Rally for D.C. School Choice at “Save School Choice” Rally on Wednesday, September 30th, 11:30 AM
WASHINGTON-(Business Wire)-September 29, 2009 - In an effort to protect and strengthen education reform efforts in the District of Columbia, more than 2,000 D.C. families will loudly voice their strong support for the endangered D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program at a Wednesday, September 30th rally on Capitol Hill.
Invited and/or confirmed speakers include U.S. Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader John Boehner, former U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings, D.C. Councilman Marion Barry, Pennsylvania State Senator Anthony Williams, former D.C. Councilman Kevin P. Chavous, Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO) Founder and Chair Howard Fuller, and Bruce Stewart, former head of school at Sidwell Friends School. Parents and students will also speak.
The D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, which is now facing complete elimination by the President and Members of Congress, has served more than 3,300 low-income children and has been hailed as one of the most effective federally-funded education programs in recent history.
The “Save School Choice” rally is sponsored by the D.C. Black Alliance for Educational Options, (www.SaveSchoolChoice.com), an organization that works with parents to identify educational opportunities in the District and to educate the public about the need for meaningful school choice. The rally will take place at Upper Senate Park (New Jersey Avenue, NW and Constitution Avenue, NW) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
