DialAFlight: World Cup 2010 - Travel Chaos Ahead
LONDON-(Business Wire)-September 29, 2009 - Travel companies are bracing themselves for a bookings frenzy as fans fight for seats and accommodation for next year’s World Cup in South Africa.
As anticipation builds ahead of the international competition, tour operators are doing their best to keep prices down while South African hoteliers are drastically hiking prices to cash in on the event. Half a million fans from around the world are expected to descend on South Africa for the football tournament.
Accommodation is likely to be scarce. Match, the Swiss-British company tasked with finding and grading hotels and guest houses for fans, still has a room shortfall of 9,000.
Travel firm DialAFlight are feeling the strain of the supply and demand imbalance.
“There is currently a huge shortage of hotel beds because FIFA have blocked off 80% of the accommodation,” says DialAFlight Managing Director Peter Stephens.
“We are still finding rooms but it’s taking time and it’s difficult.
Right now, it’s easier to find airline seats than places for our clients to sleep but we’ve noticed that flight capacity has also tightened in the last couple of weeks.
After the draw takes place on December 4th we are expecting a couple of weeks of mayhem while everyone tries to finalise their accommodation and we are hoping a few more hotel rooms will become available then.
Although the draw is meant to be totally neutral the unofficial word on the street is that the teams with the biggest groups of supporters like Brazil and England will find themselves playing in the bigger centres.”
