Let’s Bike Taiwan – Boundless Experience
TAIPEI, Taiwan-(Business Wire)-September 29, 2009 - The Taiwan Tourism Bureau is promoting “green travel” in line with the trend toward energy conservation and carbon reduction. Part of this effort is the encouragement of riding bicycles to slow down the pace of the travel experience, allowing tourists to get close to the land and enjoy the beauties of Taiwan up close. Bicycle travel has also been taken into the concept of seamless transportation services, which involves the upgrading of transportation links between major tourist sites and the convenience of obtaining travel information. Used in combination with railway and highway transport, bicycles allow travelers to penetrate deeply into Taiwan’s countryside and experience local cultures. The Tourism Bureau hopes that by enhancing the quality and friendliness of the transportation system, it can heighten the ratio of international visitors to local areas.
As the winds of LOHAS blow throughout the world, bicycle travel is an expression of the emphasis that more and more people are placing on the sustainable development of the tourism environment. This “Let’s Bike Taiwan” program is being carried out in cooperation with Taiwan’s No. 1 bicycle manufacturer, Giant, and tourism marketing partner China Airlines. Five hundred travelers from all over the world have been invited to experience this exciting, super-value bicycle tour of Taiwan.
The “Let’s Bike Taiwan” tour will kick off at the lovely mountain setting of Sun Moon Lake, with a starting ceremony presided over by Tourism Bureau Director General Janice Seh-jen Lai, Giant Bicycle chairman King Liu, China Airlines vice president Brian Chou, and Taiwan Tourism Ambassador Fei Lun Hai (Fahrenheit). Flight attendants from China Airlines will lead 170 participants in warm-up exercises. The participants will also be treated to Sun Moon Lake’s famous black tea, Thao tribal performances, and a boat tour of the lake.
The ravages of Typhoon Morakot have affected Taiwan’s tourism industry, and the Tourism Bureau is promoting healthy, environmentally friendly travel by bicycle in order to revive the inbound tourism market following the typhoon disaster. The Bureau wants to draw travelers deep into the island’s local communities to experience the slow life and the unique characteristics of different areas, so that they will understand that the typhoon did not affect Taiwan’s natural beauties. The Bureau also wants to bring tourism consumption back to all parts of the island.

Five Routes, Five Moving Experiences!
1. Magic Sun Moon Lake: Sun Moon Lake is Taiwan’s most beautiful alpine lake. It is the homeland of the tiny Thao aboriginal tribe, and is Taiwan’s production base for black tea. Riders on this route will take a rest stop at Plum Lotus Garden, where they will enjoy black tea with snacks; they will also take a boat tour of the lake and see a Thao cultural performance. They will have a soul-cleansing experience of beautiful scenery and slow touring.
2. Golden Danshui River: Sunset over the Danshui is one of the most famous scenic beauties of northern Taiwan, and the golden sheen that the setting sun spreads over the river is the most moving sight that riders on this route will see. The riders will visit the Shisanhang Museum of Archaeology, take a ferry to the Old Street of Danshui, and enjoy riverside scenery as they ride through a mangrove forest. This is an easy ride that any traveler can enjoy.
3. The Azure East Coast: The East Coast is Taiwan’s beautiful “back garden.” Qixingtan in Hualien County is the home of fine stone, and in the afternoon here you can frequently see couples of lovers looking for interesting rocks on the seashore. This route will give riders beautiful views of Pacific Ocean vastness and the majestic peaks of the Central Mountain Range.
4. The Pastoral East Rift Valley: This ride is filled with ecology, open country, and homeland scenes. As travelers ride through the lush green farm fields and breathe in the sweet air here, all sense of tiredness will lift from their bodies. Foreign visitors will enjoy seeing the rift valley terrain and the large wetlands at Dapo Pond. The route is level along its entire length and most comfortable to ride, making for leisurely observation of pastoral beauties.
5. The Oceanic Atmosphere of Dapeng Bay: Riders will take a boat across the Dapeng Bay lagoon to Seashell Island to experience the past oyster-farming culture and enjoy oyster snacks. They will ride through wetland ecologies and go to Donglong Temple in Donggang to see the gold-covered arch gate there and an NT$6 million plague-god boat (which is soon to be burned). They will also savor the freshest of seafood in Donggang.
