SAN FRANCISCO-(Business Wire)-September 28, 2009 - The California Charter Schools Association is deeply saddened by the loss of long-time education advocate Don Fisher. Fisher, who launched the Gap clothing chain and was known as a passionate philanthropist, died Sunday at the age of 81.

As a champion of public education, and in particular the KIPP family of schools and the charter school movement, Don and Doris have made a lasting contribution to communities throughout California.

“Don and his wife Doris’ remarkable support since the inception of the California Charter Schools Association, has been instrumental in our ability to achieve, alongside of our members, the advancements of the charter school movement, such as providing more high quality public education options for children throughout the state of California,” said Jed Wallace, President and CEO of the California Charter Schools Association. “Don’s desire to support public education among many community efforts and his compassion to help others, without calling attention to himself, places him in a distinct and special category of philanthropists.”

The California Charter Schools Association has been a beneficiary and partner for many years of Don Fisher. Don served the Association as a founding board member in 2003 and the Doris and Donald Fisher Fund was recognized by the Association and its members in 2007 as “Charter School Supporter of the Year.”

“At this time, we wish to extend to his wife Doris, family and friends, on behalf of our board, staff, members, and the more than 300,000 charter school students he supported, our heartfelt sympathy,” said Wallace.
