Kraton Advantage SBCs Advance Green Solutions
HOUSTON-(Business Wire)-September 28, 2009 - Kraton Polymers LLC (Kraton), a leading global producer of engineered polymers, announces new developments for Kraton A styrenic block copolymers (SBCs) that enable a new approach for environmentally friendly adhesives and oil gels. The use of the new class of Kraton polymers will make it possible to formulate pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs), sealants and coatings using natural oils. The new technology offers a green solution and represents the latest addition to Kraton’s portfolio of environmentally friendly materials.
Kraton’s innovative mid-block engineering in Kraton A1535, A1536 and MD1537 grades assures compatibility with natural oils such as soybean, grape seed, olive and similar oils. This technology facilitates the development of environmentally sustainable solutions for applications like removable labels, clear oil gels for cosmetic applications, clear sealants, fiber optic cable fill, and high performance coatings. These new polymers allow solutions to be formulated to provide soft, elastic materials with no oil bleed out.
Traditionally, mineral and naphthenic oils have been used when formulating pressure sensitive adhesives and oil gels, but recently their availability and pricing have become more volatile. The new Kraton grades enable the move away from these naphtha based oils for improved supply availability and pricing consistency. In addition, natural oils have a wider range of polarity and offer alternative formulation options as well as improved supply reliability.
“We recognized the need and priority that many of our customers are now placing on environmentally friendly solutions,” noted Jim Smith, VP/GM of Kraton’s Adhesives, Sealants, and Coatings business. “In response to new market demand, we have continued to work on enabling green solutions while simultaneously reducing the dependency on the increasingly volatile naphthenic and mineral oils.”

About Kraton
Kraton is a leading global producer of engineered polymers and, we believe, the world’s largest producer of styrenic block copolymers (SBCs), a family of products whose chemistry was pioneered by us over forty years ago. SBCs are highly-engineered thermoplastic elastomers, which enhance the performance of numerous products by delivering a variety of attributes, including greater flexibility, resilience, strength, durability and processability. Kraton polymers are used in a wide range of applications, including adhesives, coatings, consumer and personal care products, sealants and lubricants, and medical, packaging, automotive, paving, roofing and footwear products. Kraton has the leading position in nearly all of its core markets and is the only producer of SBCs with global manufacturing capability. Its production facilities are located in the United States, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Brazil and Japan.
