Cabbie Who Helped Police Catch Thief Honored

WHAT:
The courageous cab driver, Abdinasir Kahin, 40, who risked his life to help apprehend a cross–dressing, chain wielding robber, will be named “Cab Driver of the Year” at an outdoor ceremony attended by fellow Chicago Carriage Cab Co. drivers, police officers, city officials, and Mr. Kahin’s wife and three children. He will receive a bronze plaque, a cash award and his hand prints will be added to the Drivers of the Year Walk of Fame.

BACKGROUND:
Abdinasir Kahin was driving his Chicago Carriage Cab near the Belmont “L” station, August 5th around 5am when he saw a man in women’s clothing running from the police. Mr. Kahin jumped out of his cab, grabbed the cross dresser by the chest and held him until Officer Tim O’Brien arrived. The officer struggled with the thief, who grabbed the policeman’s radio, preventing him from calling for backup until Mr. Kahin, at 250 lbs, helped Officer O’Brien subdue him/her. Mayor Daley and the City Council passed a resolution September 9 commending Mr. Kahin for his bravery and good citizenship.
