TAIPEI, Taiwan-(Business Wire)-September 25, 2009 - The “PV Taiwan 2009” exhibition and the “Taipei Summit” forum, both jointly organized by TAITRA (the Taiwan External Trade Development Council) and SEMI, will be held at the TWTC from Oct. 7 to Oct. 8. The organizers lining up key PV experts from industry, government bodies, academic and research institutions to probe the latest trends in the PV industry who will address four topics, namely the “Global PV Industry and Market,” “Polysilicon and New Materials for PV Energy,” “New PV Applications and Technologies,” and “Thin-film PV Technologies.” Among the 18 guest speakers will be those from the leading makers, investors, and research firms, including Solarbuzz, Morgan Stanley, MEMC, Elkem, DuPont, G24 Innovations, Wuerth Solar, Applied Solar, ULAV and Oerlikon.

According to iSuppli, global PV production will soar 14.3% to 7.5GWp in 2009 from 6.5GWp in 2008. A report recently released by research firm Fuji Keizai points out that the rising eco-awareness, the government PV subsidization programs in various countries, and falling prices are expected to boost the PV market to US$115 billion in 2020, about five times the 2008 value of US$22.9 billion.

Forum on the PV Industry and the Market

The PV industry looks promising. The forum’s guest speakers will address various issues, from macroeconomics, government subsidization programs, to the relationships between materials and technologies. Guest speakers include Mr. Yeh Hui-ching, director general of the Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan; Mr. Sunil Gupta, managing director at Morgan Stanley Singapore; Mr. Ken Hannah, CFO of MEMC; and Mr. Craig Stevens, president of Solarbuzz.

Forum on Polysilicon PV and New Materials

Recyclable energy expert Eicke Weber points out that by 2015 half of the silicon supply will be metallurgical silicon at costs a quarter of those currently being made. Costs of silicon materials are also expected to see significant decreases to boost price competitiveness of solar cells. This forum will probe the opportunities and challenges of new materials for the PV industry. It will invite Mr. Xingxue Tong, president of LDK Solar; Mr. Torgeir Ulset, marketing director of Elkem Solar; Ms. Doris Hsu, president of Sino-American Silicon; Dr. Simone M.P. Arizzi, manager of DuPont Photovoltaic Solutions Global Technology; and Dr. Chung-wen Lan, general director Photovoltaics Technology Center of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI).

Forum on New PV Applications and Technologies

With green energy emerging as the inevitable trend for environmental protection comes the challenge of applying PV solutions to daily life. This forum brings together Round Roomage Director Chen Kuang-hsiung; Dr. Pedro Banda, director general of the Spanish research firm ISFOC; Ms. Nancy Hartsoch, VP of Marketing and Sales from US-based leading CPV solution supplier SolFocus; Dr. Jan Sumerel, manager of biomedical sciences at FUJIFILM Dimatix, the world's leading provider of inkjet printheads; and Dr. Kevin D. Tabor, director of Science and Research, G24 Innovations, a provider of dye sensitized thin-film solar. The speakers will discuss the possibilities of BIPV, HCPV, DSSC and OPV technologies.

Forum on Thin Film PV

Thin-film PV has taken off due to its low cost, flexible, and easy to manufacture characteristics. It has higher conversion rate and a glowing bright future. NanoMarkets predicts that by 2015, half of the world’s PV energy will be generated by thin-film, with sales exceeding US$20 billion. This forum will invite Mr. Bernhard Dimmler, CEO of Wuerth Solar; Dr. Shigeru Niki from Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology; Dr. Jonathan Pickering, VP of Global Marketing and Business Development, Applied Solar; Mr. Haginouchi Takeshi, general manager in charge of ULVAC's FPD and PV sales; and Mr. Arno Zindel, head of Product Line TCO, Oerlikon Solar. The speakers will discuss the endless potentials of thin-film PV.

Registration fee for the forums: NT$6,000. Special discounted online registration will close on September 30. Exhibitors of PV Taiwan 2009 and SEMI members get a NT$1,500 reduction.
