Reliant Energy Supports Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston With Donation, Volunteers for After-school Program
HOUSTON-(Business Wire)-September 24, 2009 - Reliant Energy is donating $49,800 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston for its after-school programs. More than 20 Reliant Energy employees are volunteering as tutors in the program, which is designed to help youth with education, character and leadership development, health and life skills, arts, sports and fitness and recreation.
“We recognize that our youth of today will be our leaders of tomorrow,” said Reliant Energy President Jason Few. “Supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs through donations and volunteerism is important to Reliant because it allows us to help them to reach their full potential.”
Reliant awarded the check to club representatives during an on-field presentation Sept. 23 at the Houston Astros vs. St. Louis Cardinals game. The contribution was made through the Reliant Energy PowerBlast program, which has helped raise about $179,000 for the clubs since its inception in 2005.
In addition to the cash contribution, this week more than 20 Reliant employees began helping Houston youngsters with homework and other classroom assignments and projects through the clubs’ after-school tutorial program. Since the program’s inception, Reliant employees have helped tutor about 180 students.
“Reliant Energy’s continued support of our programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs has enabled us to build and enhance the services that we offer to the youth and families who need us most,” said Angela Hodson, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston. “We appreciate their support.”
Reliant works with the Houston Astros throughout the regular Major League Baseball season each year to raise money for the PowerBlast program. During each home game, the company commits $250 for every home run hit by an Astros player. The PowerBlast funds raised by the Astros at the end of the season go to the Boys & Girls Clubs.
Another part of the PowerBlast program is the Reliant Energy Home Run Derby, conducted in conjunction with the Houston Texans. During the Home Run Derby, Reliant donates money for each run hit by a Texans player. At this year’s 3rd annual Home Run Derby held in June, the Texans helped raise $31,000 for the program, which is included in this year’s donation amount.
Reliant also supports Boys & Girls Clubs in Corpus Christi and Dallas through donations, sponsorships and employee volunteerism.
