Townsend and Townsend and Crew Purchases Levit & James Best Authority Table of Authorities Software
LEESBURG, Va.-(Business Wire)-September 23, 2009 - Levit & James, Inc. (www.levitjames.com) has announced that Townsend and Townsend and Crew LLP (www.townsend.com), an international law firm headquartered in San Francisco, has purchased its Best Authority software. Best Authority will help the firm’s legal assistants and word processors build a Table of Authorities dramatically faster and more easily than the manual methods they had been using. A Table of Authorities (TOA) is a court-required list of citations within a brief.
Townsend’s Applications Manager, Matthew Fuller, oversaw the Best Authority pilot and its ultimate selection. Fuller notes that the pilot participants responded more positively to Best Authority than to any other product he had ever introduced. According to Fuller, “I don’t recall seeing secretaries and word processors more excited than they were about Best Authority. They were totally slack-jawed, as if to say ‘Where have you been all my life?’ The secretaries in the pilot actually sent out e-mails to non-pilot participants, offering to run TOAs for them using Best Authority because it was ‘fun’ to use. I’ve never seen anything like it before – ever!”
Fuller noted the enthusiasm of the pilot group, but the final event that made purchasing Best Authority a “must” was a crisis situation when a secretary needed to very quickly create a TOA for a 200-page brief. Fuller became completely convinced Best Authority was the right TOA product for Townsend when the secretary was able to complete the TOA in 40 minutes, instead of the many hours the manual procedure would have taken. He reported to the Litigation Committee that they were moving beyond the pilot of Best Authority to roll out the software. “There were no pain points,” says Fuller, “Best Authority was a very well-received product and we were ready for firm-wide deployment.”
Fuller notes that the selection and implementation of Best Authority has been a major win for his IS department. He says, “The Best Authority implementation has been one of my prouder moments while in legal technology. It has been one of the larger victories of Townsend’s IS department.
