Samsung Co-Sponsoring U.S. National Qualifying Tournament with Alienware at World Cyber Games
NEW YORK-(Business Wire)-September 22, 2009 - Samsung Electronics, the largest producer of solid state drives (SSDs) in the world, announced today that its 128 gigabyte solid state drives will be the storage medium in Alienware™ PCs being used for the competition trials being held here this week to determine the make-up of the World Cyber Games 2009 U.S. Gaming team.
A 2.5-inch, multi-level-cell Samsung SSD will be placed inside each Alienware Area-51 desktop PC, in which eight games also will be uploaded for the competitions. A total of 125 Area-51 systems will be used in the tournament qualification competitions. The qualifying tournament will last throughout the WCG USA 2009 National Final being held in conjunction with the New York Anime Festival at the Jacob K. Javits Center in Manhattan, September 25-27.
“Solid state drives are an excellent match for the performance demands gamers put on PC systems, so we see them as a perfect fit for the competitive environment of the World Cyber Games,” said Jim Elliott, vice president, memory marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. “Gamers want the best in performance and reliability from every part of their system, and that is just what an SSD offers,” he added.
Games being played on the Alienware Area-51 for the tournament include Starcraft: Brood War, FIFA 09, Counter-Strike 1.6, and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.
The Samsung 128GB SSD reads data at 220 megabytes per second (MB/s) and writes it at 185MB/s. Besides its high speeds, gamers also like it because of its virtually noiseless operations, compatibility with overclocking of other system components and freedom from overheating.
Samsung SSDs are options in Alienware desktop PCs, as well as in more than 50 other PC systems made by major manufacturers.
The Alienware Area-51 delivers the latest in highly sophisticated, high-performance desktop computing. It features an Intel® Core™ i7 Extreme CPU, both ATI® CrossFire™ and NVIDIA® SLI™ technology as well as next-gen DDR3 memory to generate exceptionally high benchmarks and extremely intense graphics.
