The “I Have A Dream” Foundation Partners with Kaplan K12 Learning Services and Welcomes Sari Factor, President of Kaplan K12 Learning Services, to Its National Board of Directors
NEW YORK-(Business Wire)-September 22, 2009 - The “I Have A Dream” Foundation, a national nonprofit organization that empowers children from low-income communities to achieve higher education through guaranteed tuition assistance and a long-term program of academic and social support, is pleased to announce the addition of Sari Factor to its Board of Directors. Factor is the president of Kaplan K12 Learning Services, a division of Kaplan, Inc., which works with schools across the country to raise student achievement, focusing on literacy and math intervention programs, college readiness, and a variety of supplemental programs.
In addition to Ms. Factor joining the Board, Kaplan K12 is partnering with “I Have A Dream” to provide curriculum materials and services to thousands of “Dreamers” across the country. The “I Have A Dream”-Kaplan partnership will help these students improve academic performance and prepare for college.
“We are excited about the addition of Sari Factor to our Board of Directors and the tools that Kaplan will be providing to our students,” said Iris Chen, President and CEO of the national “I Have A Dream” Foundation. “Sari brings an extraordinary background in education, experience working with underserved communities, and commitment to helping students achieve, and Kaplan has a proven track record of driving student success–all of which will serve us well as we chart a new course for the organization and work to significantly increase our impact on students and communities across the nation.”
“I am thrilled to join the 'I Have A Dream' Foundation’s Board of Directors. The Foundation’s commitment to expanding opportunities for underserved students represents a critical issue in education today,” Factor said. “I strongly believe in the mission of 'I Have A Dream' and look forward to being a part of its important work.”
President of Kaplan K12 Learning Services since January 2008, Factor has led the company through impressive accomplishments including:
- Unprecedented SAT participation in Stockton, California: A district–led community initiative designed to encourage more Stockton students to attend college resulted in every high school student in this economically challenged community taking the SAT – up from just 8% participation in the prior year.
- Continued SAT growth in Fulton County, Georgia: A long-time Kaplan partner, the district consistently boasts SAT scores higher than the state average. This is particularly impressive since the district has increased the number of students taking the test, which nearly always leads to a lower average.
- Expansion of Literacy Intervention Program: Under Factor’s leadership, SpellRead, Kaplan’s small-group reading intervention program that focuses on phonological automaticity and reading fluency while providing explicit comprehension and vocabulary instruction, has expanded to even more schools across the country including New York City, Elizabeth, NJ and Santa Rosa, CA.
