CardiAQ Valve Technologies (CVT) Elects Serial Entrepreneur Nancy Briefs as a Director
WINCHESTER, Mass.-(Business Wire)-September 22, 2009 - CardiAQ Valve Technologies (CVT), which is developing the world’s first self-conforming and self-anchoring technology for Transcatheter Mitral Valve Implantation (TMVI), today announced that it has elected Nancy Briefs as a director, effective immediately.
Briefs is president, CEO and a director of privately held Elemé Medical. During her 25+ years in the medical technology industry, she has been responsible for leading the development of state-of-the-art and disruptive technologies at companies such as Vista Medical Technologies, Target Therapeutics, Oximetrix (Abbott) and American Edwards Laboratories. In addition, she was a former director of Direct Flow Medical and is an inventor on four issued and three pending U.S. patents related to cardiovascular innovations. Briefs served as a national judge for Ernst & Young’s ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ (EOY) Life Science competition from 2004-2008.
“Nancy has strong ties to the medtech industry in general and the cardiovascular sector in particular,” said Brent Ratz, CVT’s co-founder, president and CEO. “For example, she was an integral part of one of the original patents filed for Jena Valve’s aortic valve technology, and was Edwards Lifesciences’ first direct sales representative at the Cleveland Clinic. While she has been very successful at sales and marketing, business development and fundraising, among numerous other achievements, she is perhaps the most adept at creating and orchestrating teams that nurture prosperity for all those involved. I am personally looking forward to her counsel as CVT seeks to become the first company to offer a non-surgical implantation alternative for treating mitral regurgitation.”
“Mitral regurgitation is a greatly underserved medical need in the U.S. and around the world. CVT may some day be able to provide MR patients’ physicians with a non-surgical implant alternative that could significantly enhance the quality of, as well as extend, their lives,” said Nancy Briefs. “CVT is truly a special venture to be part of. Given my longtime passion for medical technology in general and cardiovascular advancements in particular, I am thrilled to get back to my roots by joining CVT’s Board.”
About CardiAQ Valve Technologies
Privately held CVT, headquartered in Winchester, Mass., has developed a proprietary system for Transcatheter Mitral Valve Implantation (TMVI). Through the combination of a unique anchoring mechanism and a novel delivery catheter, physicians will be able to accurately and securely implant a new mitral valve within a beating heart, thus avoiding open-heart surgery. The CVT procedure is designed to be performed in a cardiac catheterization laboratory similar to angioplasty or stenting, resulting in less trauma to the patient and substantial cost-savings to the healthcare system.
