NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif.-(Business Wire)-September 21, 2009 - West Coast University (WCU), one of the largest educators of nurses in California, has opened a new campus in North Hollywood. The growth of the school prompted the move from its former location east of downtown Los Angeles.

The new campus, housed in the former J.C. Penny building, located at 12215 Victory Boulevard, recently welcomed more than 600 students, most of whom are pursuing a degree in nursing. The new campus features more than a dozen new laboratories and classrooms, equipped with individual computers and all of the components for a full educational experience.

“At West Coast University, we recognize and honor our responsibility to equip our students with impeccable skills and cultivate the compassionate mindset that will enable them to be solid members of the healthcare community,” commented WCU President and CEO, Dr. Barry T. Ryan. “We focus on designing campuses that are appealing to the students and technically advanced so our students enjoy their educational experience and graduate ready to serve the community.”

The North Hollywood campus features a Caribbean-meets-Southern California “beach” environment with real bamboo accents including an academic mall with a raised pier. The campus offers areas with wireless internet access and features numerous gathering areas for students, many with computer workstations, designed to encourage students to remain on campus to meet and study with their classmates.

WCU invested close to $3 million to renovate the building interior and future exterior work could cost another $1 million. The campus currently consumes 43,000 square feet of the 100,000-square-foot site, and WCU anticipates that growth of student population and program expansion will result in continued build-out of the space.

“With the continued demand for healthcare professionals in California, we anticipate steady growth at our campuses. The North Hollywood campus has the capacity to grow in order to meet future demand, and we anticipate adding programs and classroom space to accommodate the growing number of students who want to enter the healthcare industry and make a difference in their community,” concluded Ryan.
