Attendees to Discuss the Future of Smart Energy at CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2009®

WASHINGTON-(Business Wire)-September 21, 2009 - With increasing focus on green energy initiatives and sustainable power, the International CTIA WIRELESS I.T. & Entertainment 2009® tradeshow and conference will feature smart energy solutions, including smart grid, on the keynote stage and in partner and educational sessions. This year's show will feature a keynote address from J. Chris Baker, senior vice president of shared services and CIO of San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Gas Co.; two partner seminars on the topics of Smart Energy and Smart Telemetry; and a CTIA educational session on the role of telecommunications in helping utilities “go green.” International CTIA WIRELESS IT & E takes place October 7-9 at the San Diego Convention Center.

As part of the show’s focus on smart energy, Baker joins International CTIA WIRELESS IT & E’s keynote roster. On Wednesday, October 7 at 9:30 a.m., Baker, whose responsibilities at the regulated public utilities include information technology; supply management; fleet services; and diverse business enterprises, will discuss the company’s aggressive smart energy initiatives and share real-world examples illustrating the impact of mobile technology.

This year’s International CTIA WIRELESS IT & E show will feature opportunities for attendees to explore the critical business issues involved in advancing smart energy technologies, including smart metering, grid, building and infrastructure. On Wednesday, October 7 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., The Accenture & Cisco Business Group will present a half-day Smart Energy seminar that will include one panel and two sessions on the following topics:

  • Wireless Ecosystem for Smart Energy Initiatives: A description of standards, technologies and illustrative use cases will be provided, along with lessons learned from real-life deployments.
  • Industry Perspective on Smart Energy Deployments: A panel of industry leaders and experts will share their experiences and lessons learned, as well as answer questions from the audience.
  • Status of Stimulus Funding for Smart Energy Initiatives: Speakers will discuss the stimulus funding process, what the applicants have requested funds for, and what is likely to be funded and supported.

On Thursday, October 8, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., M2M Zone and Telecommunications Media Group will present “Smart Telemetry: Automating Services and Supply Chains.” Executives from OMNI Consulting Group, Gemalto, KORE Telematics and M2MV will discuss a range of topics including: the role of SIM cards and SmartSIM in AVL and PAYD applications; mesh networks, 2G, 3G, 4G, LTE and the promise of ubiquitous connectivity; maintaining client privacy and security in supply chains; and measuring return on investment in industrial technologies.

Smart grids will also be discussed during CTIA’s education sessions. On Thursday, October 8 at 1:00 p.m., Shahid Ahmed, a senior executive at Accenture, will moderate a discussion among executives from Bechtel, Cisco, KORE Telematics, Motorola, and NV Energy during “Smart Energy: Telecom Takes Utilities Green.” Part of the show’s Critical Infrastructure Track, this session will explore what needs to happen for utility companies to really “go green” with remote monitoring and smart grids.
