750,000 Pedophiles Prowling the Internet
HARRISBURG, Pa.-(Business Wire)-September 21, 2009 - While some parents may have been stunned by the recent United Nations report that some 750,000 sexual predators have been found online, it’s just one of many challenges parents must face when dealing with their kids’ online activity. According to John Sancin, President of CyberPatrol and co-author of Surfing Among the Cyber Sharks, “Parents we talk to think that just because their kids are good kids with values, they don’t have to worry about them going to ‘bad places’ online. What they fail to consider is that, as the UN reports, there are bad people online, proactively going after and looking to make contact with their children. These people are professionals and know not only what to say to your kids, but how to say it to spark their interest and gain their trust.”
As the UN report suggests, it is a problem that isn’t going away anytime soon. The report additionally found the number of child pornography sites has grown to about 4 million and those sites feature minors including those under 2 years of age. Also reported is that the production and distribution of child pornographic images results in between 3 and 20 billion dollars annually.
“Many in the industry shy away from talking about online dangers because they don’t want to scare parents,” said Sancin. “Yet everyone seems to agree that educating parents and kids is the first and best step to begin to address the problem.” Sancin, along with other CyberPatrol executives have written Surfing Among the Cyber Sharks to do just that. The recently released book offers information and statistics on cyber bullying, online predators, porn sites, identity theft, online gambling, and more. If parents want to learn more about the problem, they can download a free PDF version of the book at www.cyberpatrol.com/bookdownload.asp.
In addition to the free book, CyberPatrol is offering a Cyber Sharks Educational Kit to schools, libraries, PTA groups, camps, community programs, law enforcement and any other groups who support kids. The kit includes a ready-to-use educational presentation, eBooks and other free tools that can be downloaded at www.cyberpatrol.com/programs.asp.
“These communities who serve and protect children are key to helping parents and kids understand the risks of online activity,” said Sancin. “Surfing Among the Cyber Sharks provides the tools they need to help kids defend themselves in a world of pervasive Internet access. It is imperative that this information is widely distributed.”
