Picis Wins Emergency Physician Documentation Charting Challenge
WAKEFIELD, Mass.-(Business Wire)-September 21, 2009 - In a recent charting challenge that put software vendors to the test of charting emergency department (ED) documentation completely and quickly, Picis ED PulseCheck®, part of the CareSuite® family of high-acuity solutions, dominated the competition. The live “Chart-Off,” hosted by CEP America, one of the largest providers of ED management and staffing solutions, was held at the California Emergency Physicians Annual Partnership Meeting in Huntington Beach, Calif., September 14. The physician charting challenge pitted emergency department information system (EDIS) vendors against each other in documenting the electronic patient record of a complex pediatric patient scenario from triage to disposition. Picis finished faster than all of its competitors, including Cerner, Wellsoft Corporation and T-System.

Enabling ED physicians to adapt and embrace automated charting in their fast-paced and hectic environment is often a key challenge to gaining acceptance of ED information systems. ED PulseCheck was designed by ED physicians and nurses to be the most comprehensive and user-friendly emergency department software to meet the needs of this uniquely-demanding environment. This exceptional win further underscores its superior design and supports its position as the market leader in EDIS. ED PulseCheck delivers real results to hospitals by helping them improve operations, drive advanced quality initiatives, improve patient satisfaction and recover revenue. In today’s world, where federal stimulus funding under ARRA HITECH is tied to meaningful use, adoption is key, and physician adoption demands speed and ease of use.
“ED PulseCheck has proven itself in our ED,” reports Matthew Bouchard, M.D., Director of Emergency Medicine, Altoona Hospital. “We have enjoyed more comprehensive charting, improved efficiency, seamless tracking of patients at both of our hospitals and substantial revenue increases. Its ease of use means that new staff rapidly become adept users, and we have experienced almost no down time. We would select this product again without question.”
In the CEP America “Chart-Off,” a live audience of nearly 400 physicians and nurse managers watched as an entire ED clinical record was documented in ED PulseCheck and orders placed faster than with any other EDIS. Additionally, the sample chest x-ray supplied by CEP was uploaded to the chart. “More than 700 EDs use Picis ED solutions including ED PulseCheck for fast documentation, simplified order entry and clinical risk management.” says Mark Crockett, M.D., F.A.C.E.P, an attending emergency physician at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Illinois and President of Picis’ Emergency Care Division. “The solution is flexible, fits into fast-paced clinical workflow, interoperates with other hospital information systems (HIS) and provides metrics for data analysis and quality reporting.”
“The most fundamental difference we found with ED PulseCheck is the amount of useful data that we generate,” says Doug Smith, M.D., Inova Health System. “Before we were running a busy department and, at any given time, you had no data to tell you how you were doing. We had a very rudimentary HIS that gave us time metrics, but nobody believed them because they were based on users putting in the timestamps. Within the first month of going live with ED PulseCheck, we could tell on a daily basis how we were doing — length of stays, time to doctor, patient disposition times, how long it takes a nurse to get the patients out of the department, turnaround time on results, etc. — and that data became available to us almost immediately.”
Automating more than 30 million patient visits annually in more than 700 hospitals throughout North America, Picis ED solutions provide integrated clinical information and financial management tools for improving hospital operations and increasing patient satisfaction in the ED.
Picis ED PulseCheck versions 4.0 and 4.1 are 08 CCHIT Certified® ED Electronic Health Record (EHR) solutions. When integrated seamlessly with Picis LYNX E/Point® point-of-care charge capture system, hospitals can also be more confident in facility charging and billing accuracy.
