“An Evening with Garrison Keillor” Can Still Benefit Homeless Programs of Lutheran Social Services of Northern California
SACRAMENTO, Calif.-(Business Wire)-September 18, 2009 - You can’t keep a good man down, especially when he has “good” in mind and he’s Garrison Keillor. Keillor was determined to keep his date and to provide a wonderful entertaining evening September 22, 2009 at the Sacramento Convention Center to help Lutheran Social Services of Northern California expand its new homeless assistance program in Sacramento. Although doctors prevailed over Keillor’s zeal and the event was canceled, "An Evening With Garrison Keillor" can still benefit our Homeless Programs with the help of the public.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Garrison as he is on the mend. He has such a strong spirit that he was still willing to join us and had pared down his schedule to help ensure his presence at our fund raiser,” said Barbara Droher Kline, Executive Director, LSS. “He was coming to support our homeless programs.”
The expectation of seeing Garrison Keillor can still benefit people in need. According to organizers, if the ticket holders and the public were to donate the ticket value ($35-$70) to LSS, “An Evening with Garrison Keillor” could still raise funds for homeless programs. The new program, funded in part by the federal stimulus funds, places a priority on “housing stability.” Whether foreclosure is imminent or whether a family or individual has been in a shelter for a significant period of time, the new homeless prevention program provides resources to help resettle people into housing. Those in need should call 211 in Sacramento to begin the intake process.
“We're celebrating our 125th anniversary and if the people respond by giving tribute to Garrison Keillor by making a tax-deductible donation, it would tremendously help Lutheran Social Services which is committed to showing compassion, promoting justice and ending suffering,” added Droher Kline. “Garrison’s spirits would be lifted to see that he is still making a positive difference.”
