Axion Announces Military Dedication Ceremony for 100% Recycled Plastic Bridges
BASKING RIDGE, N.J.-(Business Wire)-September 17, 2009 - Axion International Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB:AXIH), a next-generation technology innovator utilizing recycled plastic for high load industrial products, today announces that the US Military will conduct an official ceremony this Friday to dedicate the 100% recycled plastic bridges at Fort Bragg, which are the first known structures of their kind to support loads in excess of 70 tons.
The dedication ceremony is scheduled to take place tomorrow, September 18th, at a remote Army location at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Senior military personnel and guest speakers will provide their remarks on the successful design and implementation of the technology, followed by a demonstration of a M1 Abrams tank, which weighs over 70 tons, crossing the proprietary 100% recycled plastic bridge. Those in attendance are expected to include distinguished visitors and VIPs from the Military and Department of Defense.
“We are honored by the military’s decision to organize a high-level military ceremony that officially dedicates these unique composite bridges that were developed using Axion’s proprietary technology,” said James Kerstein, Chief Executive Officer. “By utilizing plastic waste that would normally be destined for landfills Axion creates an eco-friendly solution that transforms plastic into structural building materials that are significantly longer lasting and remarkably cost-effective. It’s a win-win, for the environment, the military and engineers around the nation that can utilize this technology to enhance our aging infrastructure.”
The bridges were commissioned by the military and built at Fort Bragg, NC in order to help facilitate troop movements which were becoming more difficult using wooden bridges with substantially less load/weight capacity. Axion’s bridges are less expensive to maintain and are engineered to carry the extreme tonnage requirements for armored military vehicles that would simply not be possible with similar wooden bridges. Friday’s ceremony will mark the second time an M1 Abrams tank will cross one of the 100% recycled bridges, with the first being a test-run in June.
Mr. Kerstein continued, “As part of our ongoing mandate to maintain enhanced levels of investor communication, we look forward to providing our loyal shareholders with a comprehensive re-cap of the event sometime next week.”
Constructed from 100% recycled high load plastic, Axion’s two bridges transform waste products that would otherwise be land filled, they resist rot and damaging insects without the use of chemical treatments and require minimal maintenance throughout their lifecycles. In addition, Axion’s initial construction costs are similar to timber bridges, and they have a life expectancy of 50 years.
Axion′s structural products have the distinct advantage of not only being environmentally friendly, but also providing its clients with building materials of superior quality and life expectancy. Current structural applications include: railroad crossties, bridge infrastructure, marine pilings and bulk heading. Developed in conjunction with scientists at Rutgers University, Axion’s patented process transforms recycled consumer and industrial plastics into a myriad of structural products that are ideal replacements for last-generation materials, such as wood, steel or concrete.
