Movie Fans Flocking to Web for Authorized and Unauthorized Promotional Clips, According to New BayTSP Report
LOS GATOS, Calif.-(Business Wire)-September 17, 2009 - Movie fans are increasingly flocking to the web for authorized - and unauthorized – teasers, trailers, featurettes and sizzle reels in advance of film releases, according to a new study published by BayTSP.
Clips posted to YouTube were viewed more than 42 million times in advance of one film’s theatrical release earlier this year and YouTube accounted for more than 90% of all views of advance content posted to user-generated content (UGC) sites worldwide, according to the BayTSP report.
The report is part of BayTSP’s business intelligence service, used by the entertainment industry to identify where their audiences are gathering online, what content is most popular and how to develop strategies to monetize it.
“The film we tracked for this report was geared toward a younger demographic and one interesting point we found was that several fan-created trailers got substantially more views that studio-created promotions,” said BayTSP CEO Mark Ishikawa. “Studios recognize the opportunity presented by these clips. We provide the capability to identify them wherever they appear online and generate revenue from promotional campaigns associated with the film.”
One studio trailer logged more than 10 million views and four fan-created trailers logged between four million and nine million views each. After YouTube, the sites with the highest view counts included 56.com, Pomoho.com and YouKu.com. North America, Europe and Asia accounted for the majority of viewers.
Content wasn’t limited to studio and fan-generated trailers, though they were the most popular based on view counts. Fans uploaded television commercials, actor interviews, regional promotional footage and one low quality CAM version of the film.
Central to BayTSP’s business intelligence and monetization services is the company’s Content Authentication Platform (CAP). CAP monitors all major user generated content sites, totaling approximately three million minutes of new postings daily. It tracks viewership on more than 100 million minutes (the equivalent of 190 person years) of previously posted video clips and continuously updates an index of two billion minutes of previously uploaded video. CAP generates real-time metrics that content owners, distributors and advertisers can use to deliver context sensitive advertising based on what appears in a video clip, rather than relying on less accurate targeting using keywords or file names.
