TORONTO-(Business Wire)-September 16, 2009 - Today, all ten of Canwest’s big city daily newspapers and canada.com went live with mobile-optimized versions of their destination news and information websites.

“Today’s launch both furthers our commitment to a strong local digital strategy and meets the needs of our loyal visitors,” said Graham Moysey, General Manager and Senior Vice President, Canwest Digital Media. “We promise to bring our readers the best news and information content where when and how they want it – so optimizing our websites for the most popular mobile devices helps deliver on that promise.”

The new mobile sites have been designed specifically with the mobile consumer in mind – easy to use with all of the information people rely on and expect from their local Canwest newspaper, on-the-go and work with a variety of consumer mobile devices including iPhone®, iPod touch®, BlackBerry® BoldTM smartphone and BlackBerry® StormTM smartphone.

Launching products designed specifically for the mobile platform opens up an entirely new consumer base and allows for new advertising opportunities. “Mobile represents a key growth area for our organization as consumer adoption and device capabilities continue to expand rapidly,” said Moysey. “We are moving aggressively to cement a leading mobile position for our brands and content through the launch of these and other recent mobile initiatives.”

For marketers, the sites provide the ability to reach a highly targeted and desirable audience. A premium sponsorship position is available at the top of every page exclusively on the mobile-optimized site, providing maximum exposure to this technologically-savvy demographic. Programs are available city by city or as a national program. Canwest is also able to build mobile-optimized pages for clients’ ads to click through to, further improving the positive consumer experience with the advertisers’ messages.

These new locally-branded mobile sites provide a unique opportunity for local advertisers to reach consumers in their cities with targeted, relevant messaging. The first local sponsors to capitalize on this new marketing opportunity include: Thrifty Foods in Victoria, Carats Investment Inc. in Vancouver, Cork (wine store) in Calgary, Mainline Motors Rosetown in Saskatoon, Cité Auto Plus in Montreal, Edmonton Oilers in Edmonton, Figure 8 (skate specialists) in Ottawa, Windsor Crossing (mall) in Windsor, and Annette Katchan - Royal LePage in Regina. All will take the banner position on their local newspaper mobile sites for programs beginning launch day.

On Friday September 18, when WestJet launches its Fly Free promotion in newspapers across Canada, iPhone® users will be able to register to play for their chance to win one of six WestJet Vacations travel prizes. A link to register in the contest will appear on the home screen of Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Regina Leader-Post, Saskatoon StarPhoenix, Ottawa Citizen and Montreal Gazette mobile websites.

The Mobile sites launch will be promoted extensively through the Canwest print and online network, including full page ads in newspapers across the country as well as online advertising across the canada.com network of sites, reaching over 5M Canadians monthly*.
