The Tuskegee Airmen comprise a nonprofit national organization founded by African American U.S. Army Air Corps veterans who served with distinction during World War II. The organization is now dedicated to motivating and assisting all American youth to achieve excellence in their educational and career pursuits. The Museum, which is an integral element of the Tuskegee Airmen national organization, preserved and displays memorabilia, which commemorates the pioneering, gallant and courageous service of the Tuskegee Airmen. It is currently located on the grounds of Historic Fort Wayne in the City of Detroit, Michigan and operates as a part of the Detroit Historical Department. Many local Tuskegee Airmen serve as docents at the Museum, which welcomes hundreds of visitors including school, family reunion, civic, business and social groups each year. The Museum serves as an attractive center where young persons can view the memorabilia, attend lectures and receive counsel, advice and inspiration. Towards these ends, orientation, aircraft flights and glider pilot training are provided for interested youth. Also, Tuskegee Airmen associated with the Museum carry its programs directly to approximately 22,000 youth and adults annually through presentations in schools, libraries and other assemblies. The National Museum of the Tuskegee Airmen is open daily during the summer months and by appointment in the winter.
