WASHINGTON-(Business Wire)-September 16, 2009 - Leading telecommunications equipment manufacturer Huawei, based in Shenzhen, China, has joined The SDR Forum, a non-profit industry association dedicated to promoting the success of next-generation radio technologies, The SDR Forum announced today. Through their membership, Huawei will be able to collaborate with the other 108 member organizations of The SDR Forum to educate and influence decision makers, develop and expand markets, and advance relevant technologies while supporting their mutual objectives.

“We are very excited to have Huawei as a member organization,” said Lee Pucker, CEO of The SDR Forum. “By joining The SDR Forum, companies like Huawei illustrate the continuing value The Forum brings in facilitating collaboration between technical, government and business leaders at all levels of the wireless value chain to improve performance, reduce the total life cost of ownership, and facilitate the rapid deployment of standardized families of products, technologies and services.”

“Huawei has established a significant roadmap in terms of SDR development and deployment,” said Zhu Haobing, Vice President of Huawei’s Wireless Product Line. “We are eager to see the benefits of global operator experience applied to the advantage of the SDR industry as a whole.”

In October of 2008, Huawei announced the release of their 2G/3G SDR (Software Defined Radio). As part of its All-IP convergence strategy, Huawei’s SDR enables mobile operators to seamlessly switch from 2G to 3G or use both simultaneously, while at the same time, allowing them to realize “significant CAPEX and OPEX through deployment of a single Radio Access Network base station, compared to the costs involved with two independent 2G and 3G networks. To date, Huawei has been a preferred partner to fully support All-IP network transformation of operators worldwide. In May of 2009, Huawei announced the world’s first commercial launch of a converged GSM/UMTS network in Panama based on their SDR/SingleRAN technology. In June, Huawei confirmed a contract for SDR technology that will enable TeliaSonera to simultaneously provide its subscribers in Finland with high-quality GSM and UMTS services using the same 900 MHz spectrum. The Finnish network will be Europe's first GSM/UMTS converged network based on SDR technology.

The SDR Forum has member companies representing countries around the globe, however Huawei is the group’s first member from China. This new membership was facilitated by the recent partnership between The SDR Forum and Infoex-World Services, allowing Infoex to represent the Forum’s 100+ members in China.

"SDR is a promising technology with a bright future in China. Infoex is pleased to be partnering with The SDR Forum to promote the understanding and adoption of Software Defined Radio across to spectrum regulators, wireless equipment manufacturers and the carrier community," said Zhang Wei, Technology Director and Chief Representative of Infoex-World Services Ltd.
